There are two ninths of October now and Ari cannot get them to sit in separate rooms.
The first one was four years ago and he did not plan it. He has never liked the idea of a date. He had watched other men get sentimental about a number on a calendar and thought it was a kind of superstition, and then it happened to him anyway, because the day he actually stopped happened to be the ninth of October, and a date is a date whether you approve of it or not.
He never made anything of it out loud. He is not a man who says things out loud. What he did, every year, was small and private and completely fixed: on the ninth of October he walked the long way home from work. Forty minutes instead of twelve. Past the school, down by the water, up the hill. Nothing else. He did not tell his wife why, though he thinks she knows, and one year it rained hard the whole way and he did it anyway and got soaked, and that is his favorite one.
Yesterday was the ninth of October.
He did not walk home the long way.
And now it is twenty past five in the morning and he is sitting at the kitchen table with his hands flat on it, and what is actually happening to him is not guilt. Guilt he could file. What is happening is that the date has been overwritten. Four years of a small private thing, and now the ninth of October means the other thing, and it will mean the other thing next year and every year after that, and he can see the whole rest of his life having to walk past it.
It got the day itself. Not the night. The day.
And that is where I stop talking about Ari, because you have a date too, and something happened on it, and you are sitting up early doing the arithmetic of every October still to come.
Let me say the size of it accurately, because a smaller word would insult you: this is not embarrassment. Something took a marker you had set, and it took it on purpose, and marking days is one of the oldest and most serious things people do.

The day was not yours to lose
Let me set the true thing down first, because you are sitting at a table watching a date get renamed.
That day has not been taken from you. It has not been overwritten and it does not now belong to the other thing, because it was never yours to hold in the first place. It was made, and given, and the One who made it did not hand ownership of it to a bad night.
I do not say that as a sentiment. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into a kitchen at twenty past five:
And I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten.Joel 2:25
Weigh what God is offering in that verse, because it is not a consolation. He is not saying He will make up for the loss with something else, from somewhere else. He says He restores the years the locust ate, which is to say the very time that was taken, the actual eaten thing, given back. God's restoration is not a replacement product. It goes to the place where the theft happened and it repairs that.
So you are not standing in front of a permanently renamed day. Scripture says the eaten years come back, and the Spirit of God is not standing at your table conceding an October to anything.
What a marker is actually for
Now the thing under it, because it is worth naming properly and almost nobody does.
Marking a day is not superstition and you were not being sentimental. It is one of the oldest instincts there is: you set a stone where something happened so that later, when you cannot feel it any more, the stone still says it happened. The whole Scripture is full of people doing exactly this. They pile stones at a river. They name a well. They keep a date. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
And here is the part that matters this morning: what a marker points at is not your performance on the anniversary. It points at what God did on the original day. The stone at the river was never a record of how the people behaved afterward.
So the ninth of October still says what it always said, which is that God did something, and Scripture stands behind that rather than my own reasoning, and His Spirit is the one making it a thing you can hold rather than an argument you concede.
And let me put the plain half beside it, because a message without it has failed you. Keep every real help you have got. The meeting, the counselor, the doctor, the medicine you take, the friend who walks with you. None of it competes with what God is doing in you and none of it is a smaller faith. It is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number, and He never asks anybody to choose between His hand and the hands He sent.
Here is the turn, and it is not a plan and it is not a new date to choose.
You are not losing the ninth of October. What that day recorded was God's action, and God's action is not undone by a night. The date is not a trophy you were carrying, so it cannot be a trophy you dropped. It is a stone in the ground and the ground is His.
Freedom is already yours this morning. It is not a prize for a clean anniversary and it is not held pending next year, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. You have it at a kitchen table with your hands flat on it at twenty past five, and that is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a morning you would rather not have.
And the thing that took the day has no right to keep it or to keep you. It is not your owner, it does not hold the deed to your calendar, and it does not get to be what October means. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not a vow about next year. It is one open hand and one true sentence, said at this table, and then, at some point today, the long way home.
And hear this plainly too, because a morning like this can go somewhere darker. If you used more than you meant to, or you are unwell from stopping, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit alone at a table with that. Get medical help now, and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page stands in place of that, and the man at the table matters more than the date does.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you sit, hand open. The right to speak them was not earned by four clean years and it was not surrendered on one October night: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep the hand open afterward, and leave everything that follows with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Ninth of October, you are not renamed and you were never mine to lose. Scripture says God restores the years the locust has eaten, and He goes back to where the theft happened rather than sending something else instead.
- Fear of every October still to come, get off me now, in the name of Jesus. You have had me at a table at twenty past five counting the rest of my life in anniversaries, and my hand is open and empty, because a marker points at what God did and never at how I behaved on the day.
- God, You are at this kitchen table at twenty past five and You have conceded nothing. Your word says the eaten years come back, so this date is not renamed, and I am walking the long way home tonight.
