The chairs are still out.
That is what Karim looks at. Eleven of them, dragged in from three different rooms, in a rough circle that got rougher as the evening went on, and a low table in the middle with the ruins of it: the good glasses, the plate with four dates left, somebody's scarf over the back of a chair because they will be back for it tomorrow.
It was a good night. He wants that on the record. He is not a man performing warmth. He genuinely loves this: the door open, the food going round twice, his uncle telling the story about the car for the fortieth time and everybody letting him. He poured tea for eleven people for four hours and he was not counting anything and he was not thinking about anything.
The last of them left at ten past midnight.
It is now twenty past twelve and he is sitting in one of the eleven chairs, alone, with the door shut, and the bottle he did not touch all evening is open on the table beside him.
That is the shape of it, and it has been the shape of it for about three years.
Not at the table. Never at the table. Nobody who has ever eaten in this house has seen him take a drink he did not want to take. It waits for the door. It waits for the moment the last car pulls away and the sound of the street comes back and the room goes from eleven people to one.
He has stopped asking himself why he drinks. He knows why. That is not the mystery. The mystery, which he cannot say out loud even here, is why the warmest room in the neighborhood empties into this.
I can host anybody. I cannot be alone for eleven minutes.
And here is where I stop talking about Karim, because you know your own hour. Yours might be after the children are asleep or after your shift or after the phone stops. But it is an hour, not a substance, and you know exactly which one it is.

The hour is not the enemy you think
Let me put the true thing down first, in the room with the chairs still out.
You are not defective for finding that hour hard. You are not weak and you are not a fraud for being generous all evening and hollow at midnight. And more than that: the safety you have been trying to pour into that hour is already yours, and it does not come out of a bottle and never did.
I do not say that as reassurance. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it across a room at twenty past twelve:
I will both lie down in peace, and sleep: for You, Lord, only make me dwell in safety.Psalm 4:8
Notice what that verse is actually about. It is not about courage and it is not about coping. It is about a man lying down at the end of a day, and the reason he can is not that the day went well or that the house is full. It is You, Lord, only. The safety is located in a Person, and the psalm says that Person is the one making him dwell that way, present tense, tonight.
So the hour is not a hole in your life that has to be filled with something. It is a place where God is already, and Scripture is where I get that rather than my own experience, and His Spirit did not leave with the last car.
What the bottle is standing in for
Now let us be honest about the job it is doing, because you will never get free of something you have not correctly named.
The bottle is not there for the taste. It is not really there for the feeling either. It is there because at twenty past twelve the room stops being full and something in you cannot make the transition, and the drink is the airlock. It is what you go through to get from eleven people to one without the change hurting.
That is what it is. And it is worth saying plainly that this is not a character fault. It is a real difficulty that a real person has, and it deserves a real answer rather than a lecture.
So here is the answer, and it is not smaller than the problem: you are not alone at twenty past twelve, and you have not been on a single one of those nights. That is not a comforting thought to hold, it is a fact about the room, and the written word says the Lord makes you dwell in safety, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that presence something you can rest in rather than something you believe about.
And now the serious practical half, and take it as carefully as I am giving it. If you have been drinking every night, please do not simply stop on your own. Coming off alcohol without supervision can be medically dangerous, and that is not a reason to keep going, it is a reason to see a doctor this week and say plainly how much and how often. Keep every other real help you have too: the meeting, the counselor, the medicine, the friend who calls. None of it competes with what God is doing in you and none of it is a smaller faith. It is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number.
Here is the turn, and it is not a rule and it is not a promise to make about tomorrow night.
You are not being asked to become a person who does not find midnight difficult. That person does not exist and you would not like him. You are being handed something for the hour itself, which is that the hour is not empty and never was.
Freedom is already yours tonight. It is not a prize at the end of a dry month and it is not held back until you can sit in a quiet room comfortably, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. You have it in a chair among eleven chairs with the bottle open on the table. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into twenty past twelve.
And the airlock has no right to keep standing between you and your own quiet house. It is not a comfort and it is not hospitality to yourself, because it charges you for something God gives free. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something already finished.
So the next thing is not a vow about the rest of the week. It is a glass set down, a sentence said out loud in a room with the chairs still out, and one person told in daylight.
And say this plainly with me, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If you have been drinking daily, do not simply stop on your own: coming off alcohol without medical supervision can be genuinely dangerous, and a doctor this week is the way through. And if you have drunk more than you meant to and you are unwell, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the room where you are sitting, glass pushed away. The right to speak them is not earned by a good evening and it is not lost at midnight: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the glass where it is, and leave the rest with Him, because the outcome is His. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
- Twenty past twelve, you are not an empty hour and you never have been. Scripture says the Lord alone makes me dwell in safety, and He does that at the hour the last car pulls away as surely as at the hour the door is open.
- Whatever it is in me that cannot go from eleven people to one, be still now, in the name of Jesus. You have had me buying an airlock every night for three years, and my hands are open and the glass is on the table, because what I was pouring into this hour was already in it.
- God, You are in this room among these chairs and You did not leave with the guests. Your word says I lie down in peace because of You alone, so my hands are my own now, and I am telling one person in daylight this week.
