The screen says 0.
Not zero written out, which would at least look like a word. A digit, alone, in the middle of a white circle, in a font somebody chose to be friendly.
Marisol has been holding the phone at arm's length on the sofa since quarter past six, the way you hold something you are not sure is finished going off.
Yesterday morning the same circle said 214.
She had not looked at it in weeks, honestly. That is what she wants somebody to know. It was not a shrine. There was a stretch back in the spring where she checked it three times a day and then it got boring, in the best possible way, and that was the whole point of it. She had gone whole weeks without opening the thing, which is the closest she has come in nine years to a life.
And now it says 0, and under it there is a button, and the button says Start again.
She cannot press it.
She has been sitting here forty minutes not pressing it, and it is not laziness and it is not defiance. It is that pressing it means agreeing to walk the whole road again from this end, and she can see the whole road from here. Day one. Day nine, which is bad. Day twenty-three, which is worse. The bit around fifty where you start to think you might be all right. She knows every mile of it because she has walked it four times, and she cannot make her thumb move.
I am not doing that again. I do not have another two hundred and fourteen days in me.
And this is where I stop talking about Marisol, because you are holding your own counter this morning, and it has a friendly font on it, and you cannot press the button either.
Let me tell you what is really in your hand. That is not a record of your progress. Somewhere in the last four years it quietly became a measurement of you, and this morning it has handed down a number, and you are reading the number as your name.

The number is not your name
Let me put the strong thing down first, because you are sitting there being told who you are by a circle.
You are not a zero this morning. You are not a one and you were not a two hundred and fourteen, and no count on any screen has ever had the authority to say what you are.
That is not encouragement. Here is where it comes from, written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into a front room at quarter past six:
Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.2 Corinthians 5:17
Take the grammar of it seriously, because that is where the whole thing lives. It does not say he is becoming a new creation, at a rate depending on his week. It says he is one. It is a statement about what you presently are, made on the basis of where you are, which is in Christ, and Christ did not move at whatever hour last night was. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
So you are a new creation on a sofa with a phone at arm's length, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own kindness, and God's Spirit did not reclassify you at midnight.
What the road actually costs
Now let us deal with the road, because that is the real weight on you and nobody addresses it honestly.
You are not refusing to press the button because you do not want to be free. You are refusing because you can see the whole road, and you have been told, by the way the count works, that you have to walk every mile of it again from the far end, alone, on your own legs, to get back to being somebody. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
Hear this instead. You do not have to walk back to a status you already hold. Whatever the day count says, your standing before God is not on a ladder and it never has been. It is a position, given, held in Christ, and Scripture says all things are become new rather than all things are being earned back.
That is written, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes it a place you can stand rather than a sentence you approve of. What is ahead of you today is one day, with Him in it. Not two hundred and fourteen carried in advance.
And let me put the plain half in, because a message that leaves it out has failed you. Keep every real help you have. The meeting, the counselor, the doctor, the medicine you take, the cousin who checks on you. None of it competes with what God is doing in you and none of it is small faith. It is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number, and He never asks anyone to choose between His hand and the hands He sent.
Here is the turn, and it is not a plan and it is not a target.
You are not being asked to walk two hundred and fourteen days this morning. You are being asked for today, and the reason that is not a trick is that your standing was never the thing being counted. The counter measures days. It has never once measured you.
Freedom is already yours. It is not a prize for a long run and it is not returned to you at day thirty, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. You have it on a sofa with a friendly font saying zero at you, and that is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into an hour you would rather not be in.
And the thing that had a hold on you last night has no right to name you this morning. It is not your identity, it does not hold the deed, and it does not get to write what goes in that circle. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not the button and it is not the road. It is one open hand and one true sentence, said out loud in this room, and then whatever help you have got, today.
And say this with me plainly, because a morning like this can go somewhere darker. If you used more than you meant to, or you are unwell from stopping, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit on a sofa alone with that. Get medical help now, and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now. Nothing on this page stands in place of that, and the woman on the sofa matters more than the number does.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you sit, hand open. The right to speak them was not accumulated over two hundred and fourteen days and it did not reset at midnight: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep the hand open afterward, and leave the whole of what follows with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Number on that screen, you are not my name and you never had the standing to give me one. Scripture says that anyone in Christ is a new creation, and new creation is what I presently am, at quarter past six, with you sitting there saying zero.
- Dread of walking the whole road again on my own legs, get off me now, in the name of Jesus. You have had my thumb frozen for forty minutes over a friendly little button, and my hand is open and empty, because I am not walking back to a place I am already standing in.
- God, You are in this front room at quarter past six and You did not reclassify me at midnight. Your word says all things have become new, so what I am is not a number on a screen, and today is the only day I am carrying.
