Screen In Dark2 Corinthians 12:9

I Already Told Someone

This message is for freedom after confessing once, being handed a plan, and finding the plan did not touch it

Mateo did it in a car outside a taco place in the rain, which is not how he imagined it.

He had imagined an office. He had imagined a proper setting, a room with a door and a box of tissues, and instead it happened at nine at night in a parking lot because he could not go back into the building and the other man had followed him out.

He said it. Out loud. All of it, in about ninety seconds, faster than he intended, and then he sat there with the wipers going and could not look over.

The other man was good about it. That is important and Mateo has never once wanted to make him the villain. He did not flinch and he did not lecture. He put a hand on Mateo's shoulder and he said the right things and he prayed, honestly and warmly, and it was not performance.

And then he gave him the plan.

The app. The person to check in with on Thursdays. The book with the exercises in the back. The verse to memorize. The advice about the phone in the kitchen at night. All of it real, all of it well meant, and none of it foolish: Mateo did every single part.

He did it for five months. He did not fudge it.

And it did not touch it.

That is where he is tonight, fourteen months on, sitting in the same car in the same parking lot on a dry night with the engine off, and the thing he cannot get around is not the failure. It is that he used up the only move he had.

I already did the brave thing. That was the thing you get to do once, and it did not work, and I do not have another one.

And here is where I stop talking about Mateo, because you told somebody. You did the hardest thing anybody asks of a person in this, and you got a system, and you followed it, and here you are.

Let me say the first thing carefully, because you are about to be told, by yourself, that this proves something about you. It does not. A plan that did not reach a thing is a fact about the plan.

I Already Told Someone

Grace goes where the weakness is

Let me put the true thing down first, in the car, before the sums start.

You have not used up your chances. There is no allocation and you have not spent it, and the strength that is actually going to carry you was never the strength you brought to the plan.

I do not say that as consolation. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into a parking lot at nine at night:

And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for My strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9

Look at the situation that verse comes out of, because it matters enormously here. It is a man who asked God three times to remove something and was told no. Three times. Not a man who had not tried, and not a man who lacked faith, and not a man who was given a technique on the third attempt.

What he is handed is not a method. It is a Person's sufficiency, and it is described as resting exactly where the weakness is rather than where the strength is.

So the place you are sitting tonight, which you are reading as the end of your options, is precisely the ground that verse describes, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own sympathy, and God's Spirit is not evaluating your five months of compliance. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

A method is not the same as the Person

Now let me be honest about the plan, because somebody should be, and it will free you.

The plan was not wrong. The app was sensible. The Thursdays were good. Those things help many people and I would not take one of them off you.

But a plan works on the outside of a thing. It builds a fence around a behavior. It does not go to the place where a man is lonely at eleven at night, or where he is tired in a way sleep does not fix, or where a fifteen year old learned that this was what he did when the house was tense.

And when the plan fails, the man concludes the failure is about him, because the plan was all he had, and he did it properly.

Hear this instead: your freedom was never going to be produced by your compliance. It is held for you by Christ, and it rests on His sufficiency and not on your successful execution of anything. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something you can lean your weight on rather than something you know.

And the practical half, plainly, because a message without it has failed you: real help exists and it is not weak faith. But there is a difference between an accountability plan and actual treatment, and you have had the first and not the second. A counselor or therapist who works with this specifically is a different kind of help from a Thursday check in. So is a doctor, if the low afterward is heavy or the nights are gone. That is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number, and it is not a rival to Him.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not another program and it is not a second confession.

You are not out of moves. What ran out was one approach, and the running out of it is not a verdict on you, and it may in fact be the most useful thing that has happened in fourteen months, because it has taken you off your own strength.

You are standing exactly where that verse puts a man: at the end of what he can execute, which is where the sufficiency of Christ is said to rest.

Freedom is already yours tonight in this car. It is not a prize for a plan followed successfully and it is not reissued after a second brave conversation, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a dry night with the engine off.

And the sentence that says you already spent your one chance has no right to stay in your head. It is not realism and it is not humility, because the Spirit of God has never once run an allocation on a man. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not the app again. It is a phone put face down in another room, one true sentence said out loud, and one call this week to somebody who does this for a living rather than as a favor.

And hear this plainly too, because shame is heavier than anybody admits and it does not always stay where it starts. If the low afterward has got dark, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, that is not something to carry alone in a quiet house. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now, and none of them will be shocked by anything you say.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing, hands empty. The right to speak them is not earned by a plan completed and it is not lost when one fails: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands empty, and leave the whole of what follows with Him, because the outcome is His. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.

  1. Plan that I followed for five months and that did not reach it, you are a fact about a fence and never a verdict on a man. Scripture says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and the man who was told that had already asked three times and been told no.
  2. Sentence that says I used up my one brave move, get out of this car now, in the name of Jesus. You have made an allocation out of the mercy of God, and my hands are empty and the phone is in another room, because grace rests where the weakness is and not where the strength is.
  3. God, You are in this parking lot on a dry night and You are not marking my five months of compliance. Your word says Your grace is sufficient for me, so I am not what I did in the dark, I am clean now, and I am ringing somebody this week who does this for a living.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
