Farouk knows the number without looking and he has known it without looking for about two years.
Nineteen.
He has not opened the bottle this morning. He has not touched it. It is in the second drawer under a folded tea towel, which is not really hiding it because everybody in the house knows it is there, and the folded tea towel is for him rather than for them.
Nineteen, and the next one is written on the fourteenth.
Here is what his day is actually made of, and this is the thing he has never described to a living person. It is not made of pain, although the pain is real and it is documented and there is an image somewhere of exactly what happened to his back on a loading dock in 2019.
His day is made of arithmetic.
Nineteen divided by the days remaining. Which of those days has the thing he cannot do without help: the drive on Thursday, his nephew's engagement on Saturday, the morning his wife needs him to lift the bed frame. Which days can be got through on the low side. Whether taking one at eleven means the evening is unprotected. Whether he can move one day's worth into another day and whether that leaves a gap he will pay for on the twelfth.
He runs this. All day. Under everything else. While talking to people, while eating, while praying.
And the specific thing that has begun to frighten him is not the tablets. It is that he cannot remember the last day he did not run the sum.
I am not high and I am not on the floor. I am just doing arithmetic from the moment I wake up until the moment I sleep.
And here is where I stop talking about Farouk, because you know your own number right now without checking, and you have not been able to put the sum down in a long time.
Let me say the first thing plainly. The pain is real. Nothing I say here treats it as imaginary or as something you should be able to pray away. What I am going after is not the medicine. It is the arithmetic, which has quietly become a second job that never closes.

Somebody knows the need before it is named
Let me put the true thing down first, because you have been carrying the ledger alone and nobody has offered to take it.
You are not the only one holding this. The counting is not the thing keeping you safe, and there is Someone who has known the whole account since before you opened the drawer this morning: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
Your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask Him.Matthew 6:8
Sit with the word need in that sentence, because Jesus does not spiritualize it. In the same passage He goes on to talk about bread and clothes and bodies. The need is not a metaphor. It is the ordinary desperate arithmetic of a person who is short of something.
And He does not say God will find out when you explain. He says the Father knows already, before the asking, which means the sum you have been running all day has never once been news at the only address that could do anything about it. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
So the ledger is already held, and Scripture is where I get that rather than my own comfort, and God's Spirit is not waiting for a full accounting before He comes into the room.
The arithmetic is the thing that is taking your life
Now let me be exact about the damage, because it is not where anybody points.
You are not lying on a floor. Nobody has staged an intervention. By every visible measure you are managing, and that is precisely the problem: what is being consumed is not visible.
It is attention. It is the part of a man that is supposed to be at his nephew's engagement, and is instead at the engagement calculating. It is the part that should be listening to his wife and is instead deciding whether eleven o'clock leaves the evening unprotected.
You have been present at everything for two years and you have attended almost none of it, and no one can see that from outside, including the people who love you.
Hear this: that attention belongs to you and it was given to you for the rooms you are actually standing in. There is no part of you God has assigned to running a bottle, and He is not asking you to bear the arithmetic in order to deserve the relief. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can act on rather than a thing you sigh about.
And now the part that matters most, and I will be exact, because getting this wrong is dangerous. Do not stop, reduce, ration or stretch anything you have been prescribed on your own. Do not skip a dose to build a reserve, and do not move a day's worth into another day, and do not throw a bottle away in a moment of resolve. Some of these are genuinely dangerous to come off without supervision, and your back is a real injury that needs real management. What changes this is telling your prescriber the truth: the actual amount, the actual frequency, and the sentence you have never said to anybody, which is I run the arithmetic all day. That sentence is not a confession, it is clinical information, and it changes what they can do for you. And if you are ever in danger, if you have taken more than you meant to or the thought has turned toward not being here, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. There are people awake right now.
Here is the turn, and it is not a plan and it is not a demand about the bottle.
You are not being asked to stop needing help. That is not on the table and it would be cruel to put it there. Your back is real and the medicine may be entirely right for you and that is a conversation for the person who prescribes it.
What is on the table is the ledger, and the ledger is not yours to carry, because the Father already knows the whole account and has known it since before this morning.
Freedom is already yours today. It is not a prize for a low number and it is not withheld until you can manage without anything, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a kitchen with a bottle in the second drawer.
And the arithmetic has no right to run under every hour of your life. It is not vigilance and it is not responsibility, because responsibility can be handed to somebody equipped for it, and this thing has never once let you put it down. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not a change to your dose. It is the name said out loud, once, and one appointment where you say the true amount and the sentence about the sum.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. The right to speak them is not earned by a low number and it is not lost because you need help: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing afterward, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His. It is not the words doing that; it is His Spirit breathing through what God already said.
- Arithmetic that runs under every hour of my day, you are finished being my second job. Scripture says my Father knows what I need before I ask Him, so the account has never once been news at the only address that can do anything about it.
- Belief that the counting is what keeps me safe, get out of this house now, in the name of Jesus. You have had me present at my nephew's engagement and attending none of it, and I am standing up, because the attention you have been eating was given to me for the room I am actually in.
- God, You are in this kitchen and You have known the whole account since before I opened the drawer. Your word says the need is known before the asking, so I am free and I am not ashamed of needing help, and I am telling my prescriber the true amount and the sentence about the sum.
