The Endless ScrollGalatians 6:4

Everyone Else's Tuesday

This message is for freedom from scrolling other people's lives until your own stops counting

There is a kitchen Alexis has never stood in that she could draw from memory.

Marble at the far end. A window over the sink with a particular kind of light in the mornings, which she has decided is east facing. Wooden bowls. A dog that is always in the corner of the frame and never the point of it. Children whose names she knows.

She has never met this woman. She has never spoken to her. There is no relationship here of any kind, and if that woman walked past her in a supermarket neither of them would look up.

And Alexis knows the shape of her Tuesdays.

It started as nothing, the way these things do, and it has become the last thing she does at night and the first thing she does in the morning and a thing she does in a bathroom at work when a meeting has gone long.

Here is what has happened to her own life underneath it, and this is the part she cannot say to anybody because it sounds so small and so ugly.

Her flat is fine. It is genuinely fine. It is small and it is hers and there is a chair by the window she loves. She had a Sunday three weeks ago that was, objectively, a good Sunday: she cooked, a friend came, they laughed for four hours.

And in the middle of it she thought: this would not look like anything.

That is the sentence. Not I want her house. It is worse and quieter than envy. It is that her own actual afternoon, with a real friend in it, had begun to be measured against how it would appear, and had come up short, in her own head, in her own flat, while it was happening.

I am not living somebody else's life. I have stopped being able to be inside my own.

And here is where I stop talking about Alexis, because you know whose Tuesday you know, and you have started measuring your own hours against something that was never a life in the first place.

Let me say the first thing carefully, because there are two easy responses and both fail. One is to say comparison is silly and everybody knows those pictures are staged, which you already know and which has not helped once. The other is to make this a lecture about screens, which is not your subject. What has actually happened is a hold on your attention, and the tool is not the point.

Everyone Else's Tuesday

You have your own work, and it is the only one

Let me put the strongest thing down first, because your Sunday was real and something took it off you while you were in it.

You are not in a comparison and you were never entered into one. There is one life you are asked to examine and it is not measured against anybody, and Scripture says so directly: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.Galatians 6:4

Look at what that verse quietly forbids, and then at what it hands you.

It forbids the measurement. Not in another is not a suggestion about attitude, it is a statement about where a person's rejoicing is located, and the answer is: in his own work, examined on its own.

And then look at the word rejoicing, because it is not a consolation prize. The verse is not saying settle for less. It is saying that gladness has an address, and the address is your own life, and it cannot be delivered anywhere else. A person standing in a good Sunday can only be glad about it from inside it.

So your afternoon was never up for judgment against a kitchen, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own comfort, and God's Spirit was in that flat for four hours with two women laughing.

The theft is the inside of your own life

Now let me name exactly what has been taken, because it is not what people usually say about this.

Nobody has taken your contentment, exactly. You are not miserable and you would not describe yourself as unhappy. What has been taken is your ability to be inside things while they are happening.

That is the actual injury. A part of you has moved to the outside and stands there looking at your own Sunday, framing it, checking it against something. And a life cannot be lived from that angle. It can only be assessed from there.

Nobody could see this happen. There is no evidence anywhere. Your friend went home and said it was a lovely afternoon and she was right, and you were not there for a portion of it, and only you know that.

Hear this: your attention belongs to you and it was given to you so that you could be present in your own days. There is no part of it God has assigned to standing outside a good afternoon and grading it. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can take back on a Sunday rather than a thing you regret on a Tuesday.

And let me put the practical half in, because a message without it has failed you. If this has got heavy, real help exists and none of it is small faith. A counselor is not an overreaction for something that is standing between you and your own life. A doctor is worth telling if the scrolling is toward the low mood rather than away from boredom. And one friend told in daylight matters, because this thing is entirely private and it thrives on that.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not deleting anything and it is not a rule about phones.

You are not being asked to be content with less. The verse is not offering you a smaller life gracefully accepted. It is telling you where gladness is delivered, and it is not deliverable to a person standing outside their own afternoon with a frame in their hands.

Your Sunday was a good Sunday. It did not need to look like anything. It was not entered in anything and there was no result.

Freedom is already yours tonight. It is not a prize for a life that photographs well and it is not withheld until your flat is bigger, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into an ordinary evening in a small flat with a chair by a window.

And the measuring has no right to stand between you and your own hours. It is not ambition and it is not aspiration, because it takes a real friend and four hours of laughing and returns a verdict about appearance. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not an unfollowing spree. It is a drawer, and a sentence said standing in front of it, in your own flat, with the chair by the window still there.

And say this plainly with me, because a habit that eats a life can sit on top of something heavier. If the reaching is toward dread rather than away from boredom, or the nights have gone, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit alone with that. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud standing in front of the shut drawer. The right to speak them is not earned by a life that looks like something and it is not lost in a small flat: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the drawer closed, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.

  1. Kitchen I have never stood in and a Tuesday that is not mine, you are finished being the measure of my afternoons. Scripture says let every one prove his own work and have his rejoicing in himself and not in another, so gladness has an address and it is not deliverable to a spectator.
  2. Part of me that moved outside my own Sunday to grade it, come back in now, in the name of Jesus. You took four hours of laughing with a real friend and handed me back a verdict about appearance, and the drawer is shut and my hands are empty.
  3. God, You are in this flat this evening and You were here for the whole of that Sunday. Your word gives me my own work to prove and nobody else's, so my attention is mine and it belongs to You, and I am free now and I am back inside my own life.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
