Hakim wants one thing on the record before anything else, and he will not go on until it is said.
Sami is not a bad man.
Everybody who hears about this wants Sami to be a bad man. They want the story where somebody is preying on him, and it would be an easier story, and it is not the one Hakim has.
Sami came to the hospital at four in the morning when Hakim's mother was dying and sat in that corridor for six hours and did not once look at his phone. Sami lent him money when nobody else would and never mentioned it again, not once, not even as a joke. Sami is the only person on earth who still calls him by the name his grandfather used.
And every single time Hakim is in that flat, at some point in the evening, the thing appears.
Not offered aggressively. Not pushed. It is simply there, the way tea is there, because in that flat it is one of the things that is there.
And Hakim has never once said no in nine years.
He is thirty-four now and he has been doing well and doing badly in cycles and he has worked out the pattern, and the pattern is not complicated: he does well, and then he misses Sami, and then he goes over, and then he does badly for a stretch, and then he does well.
The part he cannot get past is this. Sami is his friend. Not a dealer, not a hanger-on. His friend, who sat in a corridor for six hours.
How do I walk away from a man who has been genuinely good to me? What kind of person does that?
And here is where I stop talking about Hakim, because yours has been good to you too, and that is exactly why nobody has ever been able to help you with this.
Let me say the first thing plainly. I am not going to tell you what your friend is. I have not met him and it is not mine to say and this message is not about him. Everything from here is about you, and about one flat, and about nine years.

You are being guided, not marched
Let me put the true thing down first, because you are expecting to be told to do something brutal and that is why you have not read anything like this before.
You are not being handed an ultimatum. What is in front of you is not a demand that you sever a friendship tonight, and God's way of moving a person is not a shove: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go: I will guide you with My eye.Psalm 32:8
Sit with that last image, because it is extraordinarily gentle for a verse about direction.
I will guide you with My eye. That is how you move somebody across a crowded room without making a scene: a look, understood between two people who know each other. It is not a hand on the back and it is not an order shouted over the noise.
And notice the two verbs before it: instruct, teach. Neither of them is a word for forcing. God's approach to a man in a complicated situation is not a demolition; it is a way shown, one step visible at a time.
So you are being guided rather than marched, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own softness, and God's Spirit is not standing in that flat with a list of demands about your oldest friend. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
The evening has a shape, and the shape is the subject
Now let me be exact about what is actually happening, because as long as this stays a question about a person it cannot be solved.
You have been asking: is Sami good or bad. That question has no answer and it does not need one, and it has kept you circling for nine years, because every time you get close to changing something you remember the corridor and the six hours, and the corridor wins, as it should.
The subject is not the man. It is the shape of an evening.
There is an evening that happens in that flat, and it has a reliable arc, and at a certain point in the arc a thing appears and you have never once said no. That is a description of a room and a pattern, and both of those are things a person can actually work with.
And here is why this matters: you do not have to decide anything about your friend in order to change an evening. You are not required to conclude he is dangerous. You are not required to explain yourself to him, or to end nine years, or to make a speech.
Hear this: you are not owned by an evening, and the freedom to leave a room at a certain hour is yours, given, not something you have to earn by first proving the room is wicked. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can do on Thursday rather than a thing you resolve tonight.
And let me put the practical half in, because a message without it has failed you. There is real help for this and none of it is a smaller faith. A counselor will hold both halves without making you choose. If you are in a program, this is exactly what a sponsor is for, and it is the single most common conversation in those rooms. See a doctor if the bad stretches have been getting longer. And if you are ever in danger, if you have used more than you meant to, or you are unwell from stopping, or the thought has turned toward not being here, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. There are people awake right now.
Here is the turn, and it is not an ending and it is not a speech.
You are not being asked to lose your friend. That is what you have been bracing for and it is the reason you have never let anybody near this, and it is not what is being asked.
You are being asked about a shape. When you go, at what hour, how long you stay, whether it is that flat or a café, whether somebody else is with you. Those are all things a person can change without deciding anything about a man who sat in a corridor for six hours.
Freedom is already yours tonight. It is not a prize for a clean break and it is not withheld until you have made a judgment about your oldest friend, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into an evening you were probably about to arrange.
And the shape of that evening has no right to keep running your years in cycles. It is not friendship, because friendship is the corridor and the six hours and the name your grandfather used, and none of that lives at eleven o'clock in that room. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not a message ending nine years. It is a name written down, turned face down, and one sentence said out loud over it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hand flat on the turned page. The right to speak them is not earned by a clean break and it is not withheld while you still love your friend: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the page face down, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Shape of an evening in that flat, you are finished running my years in cycles. Scripture says God instructs and teaches and guides with His eye, which is a look across a room and never a shove, so I am being led out of this and not marched.
- Question about whether my friend is good or bad, get out of my head now, in the name of Jesus. You have kept me circling for nine years because the corridor always wins, and it should win, and my hand is on this page, because the subject was never the man, it was the hour and the room.
- God, You are in this kitchen tonight and You are not standing in that flat with demands about my oldest friend. Your word says You will guide me with Your eye, so I am not owned by this, I am free, and I am held while I let go of an evening I have never once said no in.
