Two fourteen.
She knows the number without looking, because the microwave throws it onto the hallway wall in green, and she has stood in this hallway at almost every minute there is.
The house is quiet. She is barefoot on the floorboards, three steps from his door, holding still in the particular way you hold still when you are listening with your whole body. Not moving. Not breathing much herself, because her own breathing gets in the way of hearing his.
There. A shift, a rustle of the duvet, an exhale.
She lets her shoulders down about an inch and goes back to the kitchen, and puts the kettle on and does not make anything with it, and sits at the table in the dark.
He is twenty three. He has been home eight months. She could tell you the exact date he came back and the exact date of every hard thing since, because at some point in the last three years she became an archive: dates, amounts, names of people, the different sounds his key makes in the door depending on the kind of night it has been. She did not choose to know any of this. She just does now, the way you know your own phone number.
And underneath the listening, running all day and all night like a fridge motor, is the sentence she has never said out loud to a single person.
If I stop watching, he dies.
She would not put it that baldly in daylight. In daylight she would say she is keeping an eye on him. But at two fourteen in a dark hallway there is no daylight version, and the truth of what she believes is right there in her chest: that her attention is the thing holding him on this earth, and that any night she sleeps properly is a night she has taken her hands off the rope.
She has not slept a full night since the spring.
Now let me stop calling her she.
Because you know that hallway. Maybe it is a son, maybe a daughter, maybe your brother, maybe the person you married. Maybe your house is empty and the listening is done with a phone on the pillow instead. But you know the arithmetic, and you know the sentence underneath it, and you have never said it out loud because saying it would sound mad, and it does not feel mad at all at two in the morning.
Sit down. Nothing here is going to ask you to stop loving him.

Who is actually keeping that room
I am not going to ask you to let go. Let me say that at once, because it is what you are braced for, and the bracing is costing you more than the request would.
Nobody is going to tell you to detach, or to stop caring so much, or to put yourself first, or any of the other sentences that get handed to people in your position by people who have never stood in a hallway at two fourteen. And nothing here asks you to step back from anything that is helping him. Whatever care he has, whatever medicine, whatever program, whatever room he sits in on a Tuesday night: keep every bit of it, and encourage him toward it, because none of it is in competition with what God does.
And one more thing before the message, because I suspect you have been carrying it in silence. You could not have prevented this. Not by noticing earlier, not by being firmer, not by being softer, not by any of the four hundred versions of that year you have replayed in the dark. That is not a kind thing I am saying to make you feel better. It is true, and I would say it to your face.
Here is what is actually true, and it is the whole message.
You have taken on a job that was never yours, and you have been doing it magnificently, and it is killing you. The job is the keeping. You have appointed yourself the guardian of that room, twenty four hours a day, on the honest belief that your vigilance is the thread he is hanging from. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
And there is a song in the Scriptures written for people on exactly that watch. It is a walking song, sung by travelers on a dangerous road, and it says this.
Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.Psalm 121, verse 4
Sit with the two verbs. Not slumber. Not sleep. Whoever wrote that knew the difference between dozing and sleeping, and shut both doors, because the person singing it was worried about exactly what you are worried about: that at some point the watch would lapse, and the lapse would be the moment everything went wrong. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
The keeper does not doze. Not at two fourteen. Not in the eight months he has been home, and not in the three years before that, and not on the nights you did sleep, which is the part I most want you to hear.
Because you have been standing in that hallway believing you are the only one awake in the house. You are not. You never have been. There has been Someone in that room the whole time, and He was there on the nights you did not hear anything, and He was there on the worst night, and He did not blink.
That does not make your love unnecessary. Your love is a real thing and it has done real work. It means your love is not load bearing in the way you have believed it was, and it was never designed to be, and the reason you are breaking is that you have been carrying a weight that belongs to the One who does not sleep.
So here is what is being handed to you, at the kitchen table, in the dark, with the kettle cooling.
You are held tonight, and the holding is not a reward for staying awake. Scripture says He who keeps you will neither slumber nor sleep, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that something a body can lie down inside rather than a sentence somebody said kindly at a door.
You are allowed to sleep. Not because the danger is over, and not because you have stopped caring. Because the keeping of that room was never yours. He who keeps does not slumber, and He is not waiting for you to hand over at the end of your shift, since He was never off duty in the first place.
You may stand for the one you love with everything in you. Standing for someone is real and it is powerful and it is yours to do. What you cannot do, and were never asked to do, is decide for him. His will is his own and God will not force it and neither will you, and no prayer you say tonight is going to be answered by turning your son into a puppet. So you bless him, and you commit him, and you leave the outcome where it belongs, which is with the One who loves him further than you can reach.
And two things said plainly, once. If you ever come to his door and cannot wake him, ring your emergency services immediately and stay with him. That is not panic, that is the right action, and no one will think less of you for it. And if the last few months have taken you somewhere darker than exhaustion, if some part of you has begun to think that everyone would cope better without you, please tell a living person tonight before you tell anybody else. Someone in your house, someone whose number you know by heart, or your local crisis line. In the United States you can call or text 988. You are not the spare part in this family. You are the one who has been awake for three years.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, low and steady. The authority to speak over your own house is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so a woman or man who has not slept properly since the spring has exactly as much standing to speak as anyone. And however He answers, and whatever road the one you love is on, what you are declaring here is already true of you.
- Night watch, you are not what keeps him breathing. The Word of God says the One who keeps me neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He has not closed His eyes on that room for one second of these three years. In the name of Jesus I hand this watch to the One who is already awake.
- Fear that has been running my nights, you are dismissed from this house. The Lord is my keeper and my shade at my right hand, and the sun does not strike me by day nor the moon by night. Go, and let this house sleep.
- God, You love him further than I can reach, and You were in that room long before I was. I stand for him tonight and I bless him with everything in me, and I leave his own heart between him and You. I thank You, because I am allowed to sleep, and because the keeping was never mine.
