Pill And PrescriptionJohn 5:6

The Third Doctor

This message is for freedom for someone who has started managing doctors rather than pain, and cannot say that out loud

Harlan is sixty-four and there are three files with his name on them in three different buildings.

Not fraudulently. He wants that said and it happens to be true. He gave his real name every time, and his real date of birth, and he answered every question he was asked, accurately.

He simply did not volunteer things, and there is no form anywhere that asks a man to volunteer things.

The knee was real. That is where this started, in 2017, and there is metal in it and an X-ray to prove it and a surgeon who did a good job. The pain afterward was real too, for a long while.

What he cannot say out loud, to anybody, in any room, is the sentence that has been true since about the spring of 2021.

I am not managing pain any more. I am managing doctors.

He knows which one is easy about it. He knows which one asks the most questions and how to time that appointment for the week when the answers are simplest. He knows what to say about sleep. He knows that walking in slowly matters and that mentioning gardening does not help. He has become, without ever deciding to, extremely skilled at a thing he never wanted to be skilled at.

And there is a particular kind of loneliness in being good at something you cannot tell one living soul about, and it is worse than the tablets.

He is a deacon. He has been married thirty-nine years. He would give you his last hour if you rang him tonight and he has done exactly that for a lot of people.

And I know which building to be in on Tuesday.

And here is where I quit talking about Harlan, because you have got your own version of three files, and you have never once said the true sentence about it out loud.

Let me say the first thing straight, the way a neighbor should. I am not going to shame you and I am not going to lecture you, because shame is the fuel this runs on and pouring more on has never once helped a man. What I am going to do is ask you the question Jesus asked a man who had been sitting somewhere a very long time.

The Third Doctor

The question He asked first

Let me put the true thing down first, before anything gets heavier than it needs to be.

You are not about to be sentenced. The first thing said to you here is not an accusation. It is a question, and it is the question Christ Himself opened with when He met a man who had been at the same pool for thirty-eight years: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

When Jesus saw him lie there, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, He said to him, Will you be made whole?John 5:6

Notice everything that is not in that question.

There is no how did you get here. No why have you not tried harder. No inventory of the thirty-eight years. He knew the whole case, the verse says so, and He does not recite it back at him.

He asks a man who has arranged his entire life around a condition whether he actually wants it to end. Which is not a rebuke. It is the most respectful thing anybody had said to that man in decades, because it treated him as somebody with a will rather than as a fixture by a pool.

So what is in front of you is a question rather than a verdict, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own softness, and God's Spirit is not standing in the third building with a list of your appointments.

The skill is the loneliest part

Now let me name the thing you cannot name, because that is what a neighbor is for.

It is not the tablets that are isolating you. It is the competence. You have developed real skill, over four years, at a task you cannot mention to your wife, your fellow deacons, or any of the three people whose job it is to help you, and skill is normally the most shareable thing a man has. He talks about it. He teaches it. He is proud of it.

You have a skill that must never be described, and a man carrying that is more alone than a man carrying pain.

And here is the thing to hear before anything else: what you are is not that skill. You are a man God calls His own, and He has known the whole case for four years the same way Christ knew the man's thirty-eight, and knowing it has not once changed the way He speaks to you. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something you can stand up in rather than something you assent to.

And now the plain half, and I will be exact, because getting this wrong is dangerous. Do not stop, reduce or ration anything on your own, and do not throw a bottle away tonight to make a point. Some of these are genuinely dangerous to come off unsupervised, and your knee is a real thing with metal in it. What changes this is one true conversation with one prescriber, and the sentence is not I have been dishonest. It is I want you to be the only one, and here is everything. That is not a confession you owe as a punishment. It is the practical act that puts your care back in one pair of hands. And if you are ever in danger, if you have taken more than you meant to or the thought has turned toward not being here, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. There are people awake right now.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not an accusation and it is not a plan.

You are being asked a question rather than handed a sentence, and the question is the one Christ asked at the pool: do you want to be made whole. Not can you. Not do you deserve to. Do you want it.

And if the answer is yes, and I suspect it has been yes for four years, then the next act is not a renunciation of care. It is the opposite. It is putting the whole of your care into one pair of hands and letting somebody see all of it.

Freedom is already yours today. It is not a prize for a clean record and it is not held back until the files are consolidated, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a Tuesday you had already planned.

And the skill has no right to keep you the only person who knows. It is not competence and it is not carefulness, because carefulness does not require a man to be alone with something for four years. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not a resolution to be better. It is the name said out loud once, and one appointment where somebody sees all of it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing where you are. The right to speak them is not earned by a clean record and it is not lost by four years of managing: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing afterward, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.

  1. Three files with my name on them in three buildings, you are finished being the shape of my week. Scripture says Christ knew the whole case before He spoke and asked the man whether he wanted to be made whole, and He asked instead of reciting the years back at him.
  2. Skill I built over four years and cannot describe to a living soul, get off me now, in the name of Jesus. You made me the only person who knows, and being the only person who knows is lonelier than the pain ever was, and I am standing up.
  3. God, You are in this kitchen tonight and You have known the whole case the entire time without once changing how You speak to me. Your word puts a question to me instead of a verdict, so I am free and I am not ashamed of needing help, and one prescriber is going to see all of it this month.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
