Everybody in Rafael's family knows about the bridge.
It is part of the household record now, the way certain events become part of a family: the night in February, the rain, the car that came across, the fourteen minutes he spent held against a cold rail waiting, the pelvis, the two operations, the eleven weeks.
They were extraordinary about it. His mother slept in a chair. His brother drove three hundred miles twice. Somebody brought food to that house every single day for two months and there is still a plastic container in his cupboard that belongs to a woman from the fifth floor.
And every one of them knows he was in real pain, because they saw it.
That is the whole difficulty.
Because the pain, the specific pain from the specific injury, is largely gone. He can tell you roughly when: about eighteen months ago, over a few weeks, the way pain actually goes, without a moment.
And he is still taking them.
He cannot say that in his family. Not because they would be cruel; they would be kind, which is worse. He can hear exactly how it would go. His mother would say but your pelvis, and she would mean it, and she would be defending him against himself, and there would be no way to get past a woman defending you with your own X-rays.
So he is thirty-eight, and he is standing in his kitchen on a Sunday morning before anybody arrives, and the sentence he cannot get to leave his mouth is:
The pain stopped and the need did not, and I do not know how to say that without making the accident a lie.
And here is where I stop talking about Rafael, because you had a real injury and everybody knows you had a real injury, and that is now the wall.
Let me say the first thing before anything else: nothing in this message asks you to relitigate your own pain. It was real. It is on record. It was not exaggerated. Two things can be true at once, and the whole freedom here lives in being allowed to say both.

He goes through the water, not around it
Let me set the strongest thing down first, in the kitchen, before anybody knocks.
You are not alone in this and you are not being carried at a distance. There is a promise made to people who are in the middle of something rather than past it: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.Isaiah 43:2
Look at the preposition, because the whole verse turns on it. Through. Not around, not instead of, not lifted out before it starts. God does not offer a route that avoids the water. He offers Himself inside it.
That matters enormously for a man in your position, because you have been waiting to be past this before you could say anything about it. The verse is addressed to somebody who is still in the river with their feet not touching. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
So you are accompanied right now, unresolved, still taking them, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own sympathy, and God's Spirit did not step back eighteen months ago when the pain went and the need stayed.
Two true things at once
Now let me take the wall down, because it is made of one confusion and once you see it you cannot unsee it.
You believe that saying I do not need this for the pain any more means saying the pain was never that bad. Your family believes it too, which is why your mother would reach for the X-ray.
They are not the same sentence and they never were.
Here is the plain version, and it is medically ordinary and there is a large literature on it: an injury can be genuine, the treatment can be correct, and a body can develop a dependence on the medicine that continues after the original pain has resolved. That is not a moral event and it is not a failure of gratitude and it does not retroactively make the bridge less real.
Both are true. The rail was cold and it was raining and you nearly died. And the need has outlived the injury.
Hear this, then: you are not being asked to give evidence against your own suffering. You are a man God has been walking through a river with, and what He asks of you is not a case but a truth, and He already knows all of it. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something you can say out loud rather than something you concede privately.
And now the part that matters most practically, and I will be exact, because getting this wrong is dangerous. Do not stop, reduce or ration anything on your own. Do not skip doses to test yourself, and do not throw anything away on a Sunday morning in a moment of resolve. Some of these are genuinely dangerous to come off unsupervised. What changes this is one conversation with the person who prescribes, and the sentence they need is the exact one you cannot say to your family: the pain from the injury largely resolved about eighteen months ago and I am still taking this. That is clinical information of the most useful kind. It does not make the accident a lie and it will not be heard as one in that room. And if you are ever in danger, if you have taken more than you meant to or the thought has turned toward not being here, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. There are people awake right now.
Here is the turn, and it is not a confession to your family and it is not a change to your dose.
You are not being asked to take anything away from the people who loved you through eleven weeks. The food, the chair, the three hundred miles twice: none of that is diminished by what is true now, and it never could be. The care was not conditional on the pain lasting forever.
What is being asked is much smaller. One room. One person. The truth said in the only place where it is clinical rather than emotional.
Freedom is already yours this morning. It is not a prize for having stopped and it is not withheld until you can prove you no longer need anything, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a kitchen before the family arrives.
And the confusion has no right to keep your mouth shut. It is not loyalty and it is not respect for what your family did, because their care is not on trial and never was. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not an announcement at the table. It is the name said out loud once, and one appointment where the true sentence is said to the one person for whom it is not a verdict on anybody.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing where you are. The right to speak them is not earned by being past this and it is not lost while you are still in it: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, stay standing afterward, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His. It is not the words doing that; it is His Spirit breathing through what God already said.
- Wall built out of my own X-rays, you are finished keeping my mouth shut. Scripture says when I pass through the waters He is with me, and that promise is addressed to a man still in the river and not to one who has already climbed out.
- Confusion that says telling the truth now makes the accident a lie, get out of this kitchen now, in the name of Jesus. You have made two true things into one contradiction, and I am standing up, because the rail was cold and it was raining and the need has outlived the injury.
- God, You are in this kitchen on a Sunday morning and You did not step back when the pain went and the need stayed. Your word says You go through the water with me and not around it, so I am free and I am not ashamed of needing help, and the true sentence is going to be said to my prescriber this week.
