Bottle And GlassPsalm 103:12

The Face My Daughter Makes

This message is for freedom from the drink that turns a mother into someone her children brace for

Nia knows the exact width of the gap.

Her daughter is eleven. When she comes home from school she opens the front door and she does not come in. She stands in the hallway with her bag still on one shoulder and she looks through the gap into the kitchen, at her mother, for about a second and a half, and then either she comes in or she goes upstairs.

That is the whole system and it is completely silent and Nia is not supposed to know about it.

She has known for four months.

And it is not the drinking that is destroying her this morning. It is arithmetic. If the checking is that smooth, that automatic, that practiced, then the checking did not start four months ago. A child does not develop a system like that in a season. Which means there was a first time, and Nia does not know when it was, and she cannot ask, and that is the thing she has been carrying around like a stone in a coat.

It is Saturday. It is twenty past eight. Her daughter is still asleep and the kitchen is clean because Nia cleaned it at one in the morning, which is its own kind of confession.

And what Nia has decided, without ever putting it into words, is that her job now is to be sorry. Permanently. That the rest of her life as a mother is an apology delivered in installments, in the form of pancakes and lifts and yes to everything and a face carefully arranged in a kitchen every afternoon at ten past four.

I cannot give her back the first time. So I will just be sorry forever.

And here is where I stop talking about Nia, because somebody in your house checks your face, and you have started paying them in apologies you never say out loud.

Let me say this before anything else, and I want it said in your favor: a woman who notices the gap in the doorway is not a woman who has stopped caring. Do not let anybody, including you, read that as evidence against you.

The Face My Daughter Makes

The distance is not measured in your effort

Let me put the strongest thing down first, because a mother at twenty past eight will fight anything that sounds soft.

You are not sentenced to be sorry forever. That is not repentance, that is a life spent in a corner, and God has not assigned it to you. What He has done with what is behind you is measured, and He measured it Himself: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:12

Notice which measurement He chose, because He chose it on purpose. North and south have ends. You can go north until you start going south. East and west have no meeting point at all. Travel east forever and you never once begin traveling west.

He picked the one distance with no arrival in it. That is not poetry. It is a deliberate statement about how far, and it is describing what has already been done with what you cannot give your daughter back.

So the account you have been quietly paying in pancakes has already been settled at a distance you cannot walk, and Scripture is where I get that rather than my own reassurance, and God's Spirit is not standing in your kitchen adding up what you still owe. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.

Sorrow is not the same as change

Now let me be exact, because these two get confused constantly and the confusion keeps women stuck for years.

Being sorry forever feels like the responsible thing. It feels like taking it seriously. But look at what it actually produces in a house: a mother who is permanently anxious, permanently over-giving, permanently arranging her face, and a child who learns that Mom is fragile and that her real job is to manage her.

The apology in installments does not lift a thing off your daughter. It hands her a second job.

What actually helps her is not your sorrow. It is your steadiness, and steadiness cannot be built on a debt you are still trying to pay. It has to be built on ground you already stand on.

So hear this: you are not in debt to your child. Your guilt is not the currency her security is bought with, and God does not run a household economy where a mother pays down a balance forever. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can stand up in at twenty past eight rather than a thing you would like to believe.

And now the serious half, and take it exactly as carefully as I am saying it. If you have been drinking most days, please do not simply stop by yourself. Coming off alcohol without medical supervision can be genuinely dangerous, and that is not a reason to keep going, it is the reason to see a doctor this week and say plainly how much and how often. Keep every other real help too: the counselor, the meeting, the medicine, the sister who would come and sit with you. None of it competes with what God is doing in you and none of it is a smaller faith. It is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not more sorrow and it is not a promise made over a sleeping child.

You are not going to buy back the first time. Nothing is going to. And you were never required to, because it has already been carried east of anywhere you could walk, by Someone who was not surprised by any of it.

What your daughter needs is not the payment. It is the person: a mother who is standing on solid ground and can therefore be leaned on, and that ground is available this morning and does not have to be earned first.

Freedom is already yours. It is not a prize for a run of good afternoons and it is not withheld until your child stops checking, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a clean kitchen at twenty past eight.

And the sentence about being sorry forever has no right to stay in this house. It is not conviction and it is not love, because the Spirit of God convicts in order to restore, and He has never once assigned a mother to a corner. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not an apology and it is not pancakes. It is a glass set down, a sentence said out loud in this kitchen before she wakes up, and a doctor this week.

And say this plainly with me, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If you have been drinking daily, do not simply stop on your own: coming off alcohol without medical supervision can be genuinely dangerous, and a doctor this week is the way through. And if you have drunk more than you meant to and you are unwell, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen where you stand, glass pushed away. The right to speak them is not earned by a good week and it is not lost by a bad afternoon: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the glass where it is, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.

  1. Gap in that doorway at ten past four, you are not a debt and you are not a life sentence. Scripture says my transgressions are removed as far as the east is from the west, and He chose the one distance that has no arrival in it.
  2. Plan to be sorry forever, and the bracing my children have learned to do at that door, get out of my kitchen now, in the name of Jesus. You dressed yourself up as taking it seriously, and all you ever did was hand my daughter a second job, and my hands are open and the glass is on the counter.
  3. God, You are in this clean kitchen at twenty past eight and You are not adding up what I still owe. Your word says You removed it Yourself and measured the distance, so my hands are my own now, and what she gets from me today is steadiness and not another apology.
