The hour is not really an hour. Ari has measured it and it is closer to eleven minutes, and he can start it from four different places.
It happened nine years ago. He is not going to describe it here and you do not need it described, because you have your own and the details of somebody else's are never the point. It is enough to say that there were eleven minutes in which he said some things and did not say others, and made one decision quickly that he has had nine years to make slowly, and it cannot be revisited, and the other person involved is not available to discuss it.
He does not think about it during the day. That is worth saying, because people assume this kind of thing is a constant. It is not. He works, he is good company, he has a whole life. Nobody would guess.
It starts at about half past nine at night, and it starts sideways, from something ordinary: a certain kind of light, a car door, somebody using a particular phrase. And then he is in the eleven minutes again and he is running them, and every time he runs them he does it slightly differently, trying versions, and every version ends where the real one ended.
That is what the drink is for.
It is not for the taste, and it is not for the feeling, and it is not, at this point, for company. It is a device for stopping a loop, and it is the only device he has ever found that reliably works. Three of them and the eleven minutes go quiet and he can go to bed.
He is aware that this is not a solution. He is a thoughtful man and he does not need it explained to him. What he would like, and what nobody has ever offered him, is an answer to the actual question.
Tell me what else stops it. Not what else I should try. What else stops it.
And here is where I stop talking about Ari, because you have your own eleven minutes, and you can start them from four places, and you have never once been given a real answer.
So I am not going to give you a technique. You have tried techniques, and a man who has run eleven minutes ten thousand times has heard every technique there is. I am going to tell you what the loop is doing, and then I am going to tell you the one thing that has ever actually stood in front of it.

Peace is a direction of attention, not an empty mind
Let me put the true thing down first, because at half past nine a man will grant one sentence and then start arguing with it.
What you have been trying to achieve is a mind with nothing in it. That is the wrong target, and every failure you have had at it was a failure at something that was never available.
Here is what is on offer instead, and it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into a room at half past nine:
You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You: because he trusts in You.Isaiah 26:3
Read the mechanism in that verse, because it is unusually specific for a promise. The peace is not produced by emptying. It is attached to a mind that is stayed, which is a word about leaning weight onto something, resting on it, propped against it. It does not say the mind is blank. It says the mind is stayed on You.
So the answer to a loop is not silence. It is a place to lean, and the verse names the place, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own experience, and God's Spirit is the one who makes that leaning real rather than metaphorical.
What the loop is actually trying to do
Now let me tell you what those eleven minutes are doing, because understanding it changes the fight.
The loop is not memory. Memory does not need ten thousand repetitions. What runs at half past nine is a trial, and it is being conducted by a part of you that will not accept the verdict, and it keeps calling the same witness and trying the same eleven minutes with slightly different evidence hoping for a different ruling.
And it cannot get one, because the ruling is not available from the past. The past has closed and it does not issue new judgments. So the trial reconvenes, every night, forever, in a court with no judge.
Here is the answer, and it is the only real one there is: the verdict on those eleven minutes has already been handed down, and it was not handed down by the loop and not by you. It was handed down at the cross and it is finished and it is in your favor. There is no new evidence to bring, because the case is not being heard.
That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something a man can lean his whole weight on at half past nine rather than something he affirms on a Sabbath afternoon.
And now the serious half, said as carefully as I mean it. If you have been drinking every night, please do not simply stop by yourself. Coming off alcohol without medical supervision can be genuinely dangerous, and that is not a reason to keep going, it is the reason to see a doctor this week and say out loud how much, how often, and what it is for. That last part matters: a loop that runs every night for nine years is itself a thing there is real help for, and saying it plainly to someone equipped for it is not weakness. Keep every other real help too. None of it competes with what God is doing in you and none of it is a smaller faith. It is His kindness arriving with a face and a phone number.
Here is the turn, and it is not a technique and it is not an instruction to stop thinking about it.
You are not being asked to empty your mind at half past nine. You are being told that the court is closed, that the verdict on those eleven minutes was handed down by God and not by you, and that the thing your mind has been trying to obtain by repetition has already been granted by decree.
So the loop does not need to be silenced. It needs to be answered, and there is an answer, and it is not yours to generate.
Freedom is already yours tonight. It is not a prize for a quiet mind and it is not held back until the eleven minutes stop, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into half past nine at night.
And the trial has no right to reconvene in you. It is not conscience and it is not honesty, because conscience delivers you to the mercy of God and then stops, and this thing has never once stopped. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not three of them. It is a glass set down, a sentence said out loud in this room, and a doctor this week who hears both halves: the drinking and the loop.
And say this plainly with me, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If you have been drinking daily, do not simply stop on your own: coming off alcohol without medical supervision can be genuinely dangerous, and a doctor this week is the way through. And if you have drunk more than you meant to and you are unwell, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, get medical help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you sit, glass pushed away. The right to speak them is not produced by a quiet week and it is not lost at half past nine: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the glass where it is, and leave the rest with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Eleven minutes that reconvene in me every night, this court is closed and it has no judge in it. Scripture says God keeps in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on Him, and a mind that is stayed is leaning and not empty.
- Part of me that will not accept the verdict, be still now, in the name of Jesus. You have called the same witness ten thousand times hoping for a different ruling, and my hands are open and the glass is on the table, because the ruling was handed down at the cross and it is in my favor.
- God, You are in this room at half past nine when it usually starts. Your word says the mind stayed on You is kept, so my hands are my own now, and I am leaning my whole weight on Your word instead of pouring another one.
