The Endless ScrollPsalm 90:12

The Report Comes On Sunday

This message is for freedom from a compulsion measured back to you in hours by the device that holds it

It arrives on Sunday morning and Robyn has started reading it in bed before she is properly awake, which is, when she thinks about it, quite funny.

Your screen time was up 12% last week. Daily average: 6 hours 14 minutes.

Six hours and fourteen minutes.

She is not a teenager. She is thirty-one, she has a job that she is good at, she runs, she has friends, she cooked something ambitious on Thursday and it worked. There is nothing about her life from outside that would make anybody worried.

And she does that number every day.

She has tried, honestly, to make it make sense. She has broken it down. Some of it is work. Some of it is messages, which is people, which is not nothing. Some of it is music. She has done the arithmetic that gets the number down to about four and a half honest hours, and four and a half hours is still four and a half hours, and she knows exactly which four and a half they are, because they are the ones that are gone.

There is a particular way it happens and she could describe it precisely. She picks it up to check one thing. There is a completely real reason. And then there is a sort of slippage, not a decision anywhere in it, and then she is looking at something she does not care about, made by somebody she does not know, about a subject she has no interest in, and eleven minutes have gone.

Eleven minutes at a time. Six hours and fourteen minutes.

And what the Sunday report actually does to her is not information. She already knows. What it does is issue a verdict once a week, in a friendly font, with a percentage.

I do not need to be told the number. I need to know what to do about the fact that I already knew it.

And here is where I stop talking about Robyn, because yours arrived this week too, and you have got your own honest arithmetic that brings it down to something more defensible.

Let me say the first thing carefully, because there are two wrong ways to handle this and both of them are common. One is to be told it is fine and everybody does it, which is trivializing something that is genuinely eating your life. The other is to be lectured about technology, which is not your subject: you are not confused about phones. What is on you is a hold, and holds deserve to be taken seriously without being moralized at.

The Report Comes On Sunday

Numbering days is a wisdom, not a verdict

Let me set the true thing down first, before Sunday hands you the number again.

You are not in the dock. There is no charge and there is no percentage that has anything to say about who you are. And yet counting time is not a modern invention and it is not a cruelty, because Scripture asks God to teach it as a skill: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.Psalm 90:12

Look at what that verse asks for and what it does with it.

It asks to be taught to number days, which means honest counting is a thing a person has to learn rather than a thing a device does to them. And it says what the counting is for: that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Not that we may feel bad. The whole point of the number is to be handed forward into something.

Your report gives you a number and no wisdom. It is arithmetic without a hand on your shoulder. What the psalm asks for is the same number with God in the room, which turns out to be a completely different experience of the same figure.

So the counting is not your enemy, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own softness, and God's Spirit is not the author of that Sunday morning feeling.

Eleven minutes is the actual unit

Now let me be precise, because you have been trying to solve the wrong number.

Six hours and fourteen minutes is not a thing anybody experiences. Nobody sits down for six hours. It is a total, assembled afterward out of a hundred and something small pieces, and that is exactly why it feels unanswerable: you cannot fight a total.

The unit is eleven minutes. That is the real thing. And eleven minutes is a size a person can actually meet, because at the front of every single one of them there is a moment where a phone is picked up for a real reason.

That moment is where you live, and it happens a hundred times a day, and it is not a moral crisis. It is a hinge.

Hear this: your attention belongs to you and it was given to you, and there is no part of it God has assigned to something you do not care about, made by somebody you do not know. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can act on at the hinge rather than a thing you resolve on a Sunday.

And let me say the practical half plainly, because a message without it has failed you. If this has got heavy, real help exists and none of it is small faith. A counselor is not an overreaction for something that takes six hours a day out of a life. A doctor is worth telling if you are not sleeping, or if what you scroll toward is anxiety or low mood rather than boredom, because in that case the phone is a symptom and treating a symptom will not work. And one friend told in daylight does more than any app, because the thing runs on nobody knowing the number.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a target and it is not deleting anything.

You are not being asked to get the number down. That is a scoreboard response to a scoreboard problem and it will last nine days and then Sunday will hand you a percentage again.

What is actually in front of you is much smaller: one hinge, met once, on purpose. The moment the phone comes up for a real reason is the only place any of this is decided, and it is not decided by resolve, it is decided by whose the attention is understood to be.

Freedom is already yours this morning. It is not a prize for a good week of hours and it is not withheld while the average is what it is, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a Sunday with a report on the screen.

And the report has no right to issue a verdict on you. It is a total and not a judgment, and the friendly font does not give it standing to say what you are. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not an app and it is not a target. It is a drawer, and a sentence said standing in front of it.

And say this plainly with me, because a habit that eats a life can sit on top of something heavier. If the reaching is toward dread rather than away from boredom, or the nights have gone, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit alone with that. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud standing in front of the shut drawer. The right to speak them is not earned by a low average and it is not lost by a high one: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the drawer closed, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.

  1. Sunday report that measures a compulsion back to me in hours, you are a total and you are not a verdict. Scripture asks God to teach us to number our days so that we apply our hearts to wisdom, so a number is for handing forward and never for standing in judgment.
  2. Slippage that takes eleven minutes at a time and never once announces itself, get off me now, in the name of Jesus. You have had me giving my life to something I do not care about, made by somebody I do not know, and the drawer is shut and my hands are empty.
  3. God, You are in this room on a Sunday morning and You are not the author of what that screen does to me. Your word says the counting is for wisdom, so my attention is mine and it belongs to You, and I am free now, at this hinge, this morning.
