Denise has never met this man and she has been arguing with him since Tuesday.
She does not know his name. She knows a picture that is probably not him and eleven words he wrote under something she cares about, and she knows the particular tone of them, and she has been carrying that tone around for four days like a stone in a shoe.
She replied on Tuesday. She was proud of the reply, briefly. He replied to the reply. She did not reply again, which she considers a victory, and she has now written about nine further replies in her head, and two of them are extremely good.
She composed one at two in the morning on Thursday.
Here is what she wants somebody to understand before anything else, and it is the reason a lecture about being nice online would bounce straight off her: she is not wrong. The thing he said was genuinely unkind and it was about something that matters and it deserved answering.
That is not the problem. She would do it again.
The problem is that it is Saturday and she snapped at her sister on the phone about something else entirely and heard the tone in her own voice and it was his tone, and she is walking around her own house carrying a war with a man she will never meet in a fight that has no end condition, because there is no version of this where he writes back and says: you know what, you are right.
There is no way to win this and no way to finish it and I am still in it four days later.
And here is where I stop talking about Denise, because you have your own one going, and it is Saturday for you too, and you have been composing at two in the morning.
Let me say the first thing before anything else. I am not going to tell you your anger is a sin, because it is not, and if I did you would rightly stop reading. Anger at unkindness is a working conscience. What I am going to say is that this particular fight has been engineered to never conclude, and a conscience running with no off switch will burn a person down.

Swift to hear, slow to wrath, and here is why
Let me put the true thing down first, because it goes at the mechanism and not at your feelings.
You are not in the wrong for being angry. And there is an order given in Scripture for how a person handles it, and the reason attached to it is the most practical sentence in the whole New Testament on this subject: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man works not the righteousness of God.James 1:19-20
Look at the reason, because it is not a moral scolding. It is an outcome statement. The wrath of man works not the righteousness of God.
It does not say your anger is wicked. It says it does not produce the thing you want. It is not an engine that makes justice; it is an engine that makes heat, and you have been running it for four days at some cost to your sister. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
And notice what comes first in the order: swift to hear. Not swift to be silent. The Scripture is not asking you to stop caring about what was said. It puts listening first, speaking second, wrath third, and a comment thread reverses that order completely by design.
So your anger is legitimate and its current employment is producing nothing, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own opinion, and God's Spirit is not the author of a two in the morning draft.
A fight with no end condition
Now let me be precise, because precision is what lets a person put something down.
Every fight a human being has ever been built to fight has an end condition. Somebody apologizes. Somebody walks away. A hand is shaken. Somebody is proved right in front of witnesses who matter. Even a fight that ends badly ends.
This one cannot end. He is not going to concede, you are never going to meet, there are no witnesses whose opinion you will ever learn, and the thread will be gone in a week and neither of you will remember it in a year.
So the anger has nowhere to discharge, and anger with nowhere to go does not evaporate. It gets spent locally, on whoever is nearest, which on Saturday was your sister.
That is the actual cost and it is the only cost that matters. Not the eleven words. The tone in your own voice on a phone call about something else entirely.
Hear this: your attention belongs to you and your peace was not put up as stakes in that thread. There is no part of you God assigned to a war that cannot conclude, and He is not asking you to stop caring about unkindness, only to stop paying a stranger rent. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something you can put down today rather than something you agree with.
And the practical half, plainly, because a message without it has failed you. If the anger has got heavy, or if you are carrying it into your body, tell somebody, and none of it is small faith. A counselor is not an overreaction, especially if what those eleven words touched is older than Tuesday, which it very often is. A doctor is worth telling if you are not sleeping or if the two in the mornings are regular. And say one true sentence to your sister in daylight, because she caught the end of something that was never hers.
Here is the turn, and it is not conceding and it is not deleting anything.
You are not being asked to decide he was right. He was not right. Nothing here requires you to soften what you think about eleven unkind words, and you are allowed to keep every bit of your conviction.
What is being asked is that you stop feeding a fight that has no end condition, on the grounds that it produces nothing and it is being paid for by people who love you.
Freedom is already yours today. It is not a prize for a calm temperament and it is not withheld until he apologizes, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a Saturday in a house where a phone call went wrong.
And the thread has no right to set the tone of your voice with your own sister. It is not conviction and it is not standing for something, because standing for something produces something and this has produced four days and a snapped sentence. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not the tenth reply. It is a drawer, a sentence said standing in front of it, and a phone call to your sister in daylight.
And say this plainly with me, because a habit that eats a life can sit on top of something heavier. If the reaching is toward dread rather than away from boredom, or the nights have gone, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit alone with that. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud standing in front of the shut drawer. The right to speak them is not earned by a calm week and it is not lost by four days of anger: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, leave the drawer closed, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Fight with a man I will never meet in a thread that cannot conclude, you are finished setting the tone in my house. Scripture says the wrath of man works not the righteousness of God, and that is an outcome and not a scolding: you produce heat and you have never once produced justice.
- Tone that got into my voice on a phone call with my own sister, get out now, in the name of Jesus. You were his and you came home with me on Tuesday, and the drawer is shut and my hands are empty, because my peace was never put up as stakes in that thread.
- God, You are in this house on a Saturday and You are not the author of a draft written at two in the morning. Your word puts swift to hear first and slow to wrath third, so my attention is mine and it belongs to You, and I am free now and I am ringing my sister back in daylight.
