Ninety Seconds Of Quiet

This message is for freedom for someone who can no longer be alone with silence for the length of a kettle boiling

Maeve has measured it and it is ninety seconds. That is roughly how long a kettle takes in her flat and it is longer than she can stand.

She noticed on a Tuesday because the phone was charging in the hall and she had put the kettle on and she stood there with nothing, and she got about a third of the way through and went and got it.

Nothing was wrong. There was no crisis and no bad news and no dread. It was a Tuesday and there was a kettle and she could not do it.

So she started paying attention, which she now half regrets, and she has a list.

She cannot be in a lift alone without it. She cannot walk from the car to a shop. She cannot sit in a waiting room, or stand at a bus stop, or wait for a friend at a table, or be in a bath. She has begun putting something on for the four minutes it takes to brush her teeth and put a face cream on.

She is thirty-three. She has friends and a life and a faith she would describe as real.

And she cannot be alone with quiet for the length of time it takes water to boil.

Here is what she has been circling for two weeks, and she has not said it to anybody because she cannot make it sound like anything:

It is not boredom. Boredom is not this fast. Something in me will not be left alone with itself for a minute and a half, and I do not know what it is I think is waiting there.

And here is where I stop talking about Maeve, because you have your own ninety seconds, and you know exactly which ordinary moments you have started filling, and none of them are dramatic and that is the strangest part.

I want to say the first thing gently. What is happening is not a discipline failure and it is not a modern moral collapse, and I am not going to tell you that people used to be able to sit still. What has happened is that quiet stopped being a room you could go into, and became a room you are avoiding, and there is a difference and it matters.

Ninety Seconds Of Quiet

He was not in the wind

Let me put the true thing down first, because everything turns on what you believe is in the quiet.

The silence is not empty and it is not a test. It is a place, and it is the specific place where God has chosen to be most clearly heard, and Scripture makes that point by ruling out the loud options one at a time:

And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:11-12

Watch how deliberate that is. Three enormous events, each one exactly what a person would expect God to be in, and each one explicitly ruled out. Wind, no. Earthquake, no. Fire, no.

And then something so quiet that the phrase behind it is closer to a sound of thin silence.

And notice who this is happening to. Elijah is not in a good state in that chapter. He is exhausted and frightened and has asked to die, and God does not hand him a loud thing. He hands him quiet, and the quiet turns out to be where He is.

So what is waiting in your ninety seconds is not what you fear, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own optimism, and God's Spirit is not in that kettle-length silence with a list of your failures.

What is actually in there

Now let me name the thing you have been circling, because you are close to it and one more inch will do it.

Something is in the quiet. You are not imagining that. But it is almost certainly not a monster, and it is almost certainly not a judgment. In most people, what waits in an unfilled minute is one of three ordinary things: a sadness that has not been looked at, a decision that has not been made, or a piece of tiredness that has never been allowed to register.

None of those are dangerous. All of them are patient. They will wait for years, which is exactly why they are still there.

And the filling works, which is the trap. Ninety seconds is easy to fill. The cost is not the ninety seconds; the cost is that a person who fills every gap never once encounters what is in their own life, and slowly stops being able to.

Hear this: your attention belongs to you and it was given to you, and the quiet is not a threat you have to survive, it is a room God is in. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a place you can actually stand in rather than a comforting idea about silence.

And the practical half, plainly, because a message without it has failed you. If the quiet has become genuinely frightening rather than merely awkward, that is worth real help and none of it is small faith. A counselor is exactly right for this and it is not an overreaction. A doctor is worth telling if the reaching is anxiety, because what you are describing can be anxiety and anxiety responds to treatment rather than to resolve. And one friend told in daylight, because a thing that sounds like nothing stays enormous while it is unsaid.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a silent retreat and it is not a rule about music.

You are not being asked to become a contemplative or to sit in an hour of nothing. Ninety seconds is the actual unit and ninety seconds is the whole ask, because ninety seconds is where the avoidance lives.

And what you go into it with is not courage. It is a fact: the still small voice is what is in there, and the God who ruled out the wind and the earthquake and the fire chose a sound of thin silence to speak in, and He chose it for a man who was exhausted and frightened and wanted to die.

Freedom is already yours this evening. It is not a prize for a quiet mind and it is not withheld while you still reach at a bus stop, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a flat with a kettle in it.

And the filling has no right to take every gap in your life. It is not company and it is not harmless, because it has left you unable to be in a lift with yourself. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not an hour of silence. It is a drawer, a sentence said standing in front of it, and one kettle waited out.

And say this plainly with me, because a habit that eats a life can sit on top of something heavier. If the reaching is toward dread rather than away from boredom, or the nights have gone, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, do not sit alone with that. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud standing in front of the shut drawer with the kettle going. The right to speak them is not earned by a still mind and it is not lost by a hand that reaches: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, wait for the click, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.

  1. Ninety seconds of quiet that I have not been able to stand, you are a room and you are not a threat. Scripture says God was not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, and after all three there was a still small voice, and that is what is actually in you.
  2. Thing I am afraid is waiting in an unfilled minute, be still and be looked at now, in the name of Jesus. You have had me filling lifts and bus stops and the length of brushing my teeth, and the drawer is shut and my hands are empty, because what waits in a quiet minute is patient and it is not a monster.
  3. God, You are in this flat this evening and You chose thin silence to speak in, and You chose it for a man who was exhausted and had asked to die. Your word says the voice is small and still, so my attention is mine and it belongs to You, and I am free now and I am waiting for this kettle.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
