I Was Twelve When I Found It

This message is for freedom from something first met as a child and carried into adult life, without being defined by the age it started

It was a Wednesday in the school holidays and it was a spare room with a laptop in it and Jodie was twelve.

That is the whole story. There is no tragedy in it. Nobody did anything to her. There was no older cousin and no cruel adult and nothing that would make a person on a documentary lean forward. There was a spare room in her aunt's house, and a laptop somebody had left open, and forty minutes, and a twelve year old who was bored and did not know what she was looking at until she did.

She is twenty-four now.

And here is the shape of it, which is a shape almost nobody outside describes accurately: it has not been a crisis. It has never once been a crisis. It has been a small, quiet, absolutely continuous fact of her life for twelve years, like a hum in a fridge, and it has run underneath finishing school and a degree and two jobs and one long relationship and a very ordinary life that people would call a good one.

What has arrived this year is not shame. She got over the worst of the shame at about nineteen, honestly, in a way she cannot explain to anybody.

What has arrived is a much colder thought, and she had it in the bathroom at a friend's engagement party in March, and she has had it maybe four hundred times since.

I have never known myself without this. There is no version of me underneath it. It started before I did.

That is the sentence. Not I am disgusting. She does not think that. It is: I do not know who was supposed to be here instead.

And here is where I stop talking about Jodie, because you were young too when it started, and you have started to suspect that the person you would otherwise have been never actually existed.

I want to say one thing before anything else, and I want it said clearly: what happened in that room when you were twelve was not a decision you made about your life. A twelve year old did not choose a trajectory. Something arrived, and a child's brain did what a child's brain does, and none of that constitutes a verdict on who you are.

I Was Twelve When I Found It

You did not start at twelve

Let me put the strongest thing down first, because that sentence about there being no version of you underneath is the one doing the damage.

You did not begin in a spare room. Your life did not start on that Wednesday, and the person you are was not formed there and does not date from there.

And I do not say that as encouragement. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into whatever room you are reading this in:

For You are my hope, O Lord God: You are my trust from my youth. By You have I been held up from birth: You are He that took me out of my mother's womb.Psalm 71:5-6

Read where the psalm puts the starting line. Not at a decision, not at a conversion, not at the day somebody got their life together. From birth. Before memory, before language, before anything that could be called a choice. The holding was already happening when you were too small to know a hand was there, and it did not begin when you started behaving.

So there is a version of you underneath this, and it is not a hypothetical one you missed out on. It is the one God has been holding since before you can remember, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own kindness, and His Spirit did not arrive in your life at twenty-four to assess the damage.

Twelve years is a length, not an identity

Now the arithmetic, because it is the second half of what is crushing you and it is wrong in a specific way.

You have been treating the duration as the proof. Twelve years, therefore it is who you are. Twelve years, therefore it has become structural. That reasoning feels rigorous, and it is not: length tells you how long something has been happening. It does not tell you what it is.

A thing can run for twelve years and still be a habit rather than a nature. And a nature is precisely the thing that has been settled elsewhere, by Someone else, and not by duration.

Hear this: you are not made of this. You are a person God calls His own, and that is your nature, and this is a pattern running across it. That is written down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can stand on rather than a thing you would like to be true.

And let me say the practical half, because a message without it has failed you. If you want help with this, there is real help and none of it is a sign of small faith. A counselor who deals with this specifically. An accountability app if that suits you, or a person who simply knows. A doctor if the nights are wrecking your sleep or the low afterward is heavy. And I want to be plain about one thing that gets said badly in churches: nobody is required to tell a partner or a leader as the price of being free. That may be right for you and it may be right later, but it is a decision made with wisdom and not a toll you pay at a gate.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a program and it is not a promise you make tonight.

You are not recovering a person who never existed. That has been the whole terror of this, and it is not true: the person underneath is not a hypothetical. She has been carried since before you could remember, by a God who was holding you in a spare room at twelve and is holding you at twenty-four, and nothing about the last twelve years constitutes a new identity.

Freedom is already yours. It is not a prize for a clean month and it is not issued once you have told the right person, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. You have it tonight, unresolved, with the phone still in your hand as you read this. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a very ordinary evening.

And the sentence that says there is no version of you underneath this has no right to stay in your head. It is not insight and it is not honesty, because the Spirit of God convicts in order to restore and never to erase a person's history of being held. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not a confession and it is not a vow. It is a phone put face down in another room, and one true sentence said out loud in the room you come back to.

And hear this plainly too, because shame is heavier than anybody admits and it does not always stay where it starts. If the low afterward has got dark, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, that is not something to carry alone in a quiet house. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now, and none of them will be shocked by anything you say.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the room you have come back to, with nothing in your hands. The right to speak them is not earned by a clean run and it is not forfeited by twelve years: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands empty, and leave the whole of what follows with Him, because the outcome is His. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

  1. Wednesday in a spare room when I was twelve, you are not my starting line, and what a child first met there does not get to define the adult standing here. Scripture says I have been held up from birth and God was my trust from my youth, so the holding was already happening before I could know a hand was there.
  2. Sentence that says there is no version of me underneath this, get out of my head now, in the name of Jesus. You take a length and call it a nature, and my hands are empty and the phone is face down in another room, because twelve years tells you how long and never what.
  3. God, You are in this room where I have come back to stand and You did not arrive to assess the damage. Your word says You took me out of my mother's womb, so I am not what I did in the dark, I am clean now, and the person underneath is the one You have been carrying the whole time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
