I Have Confessed The Wrong Thing

This message is for freedom for the person who has named the act a hundred times and never once named the loneliness under it

Ari has confessed this so many times that he has a version of it that runs to about forty seconds.

He can do it well. That is not a boast and it is not cynicism. He has done it in three different cities, to two ministers, one counselor, one very kind friend at a retreat in 2019 and, more times than he could count, alone, out loud, in his own kitchen, at one in the morning.

The forty second version is honest. It contains no minimizing. He names it plainly, he does not blame anybody, he does not attach a reason, and he asks for mercy, and he means every word of it.

And nothing changes. Not for a week, not for a decade.

He is not disillusioned about God. That is worth saying because it is where people assume a man like this ends up. He believes he is forgiven. He has never once doubted the mercy. If you asked him whether God had heard the forty second version, he would say yes without hesitating.

So he has been left with a genuine puzzle, and he is a careful enough man to have kept sitting with it rather than filing it.

It came apart three weeks ago at a wedding.

He was at a table of people he did not know and a woman asked him what he did, and they talked for about ten minutes about nothing at all, and it was easy, and she laughed at something he said, and he went home afterward and felt a specific kind of ache that took him two days to identify, and it was this:

That was the longest anybody has talked to me about nothing in about four years.

And then, on the third day, the other half of it arrived and would not leave.

I have confessed the thing I do a hundred times. I have never once said out loud that I am completely alone.

And here is where I stop talking about Ari, because you have your own forty second version, and it is honest, and it has never worked, and you are beginning to suspect you have been apologizing at the wrong address.

Let me say the first thing carefully. Nothing about your confession was false and nothing about it was rejected. What I want to suggest is smaller and stranger: you have been naming the smoke, faithfully and repeatedly, and the fire is in a different room.

I Have Confessed The Wrong Thing

God said it before anything was wrong

Let me put the true thing down first, because it is going to reframe everything else.

Your aloneness is not a symptom of your sin. It is not a punishment and it is not what is left over after a decade of this. It is a real condition, and God named it as not good before there was any wrongdoing in the world at all:

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone.Genesis 2:18

Sit with when that sentence was spoken. Nothing had gone wrong. There was no shame yet, no hiding, no fall, nothing to confess anywhere in the account. The world was being called good line after line, and then God looks at one thing and says: not that.

Which means what you have been carrying is not the residue of a bad decade. It is the one thing God Himself pointed at and said should not be, and He said it about a man who had done nothing wrong. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.

So the ache you identified two days after a wedding is not a weakness to be repented of, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own reading of you, and God's Spirit is not waiting for a better confession before He deals with it.

You have been confessing at the wrong address

Now let me put the two things beside each other, because you are careful and you will see it immediately.

The forty second version deals with an act. It is accurate about the act. It is not evasive and it is not a performance. And it has been offered a hundred times to a God who forgave it the first time and has not required it since.

Meanwhile the thing underneath, the four years of nobody talking to you about nothing, has never once been said out loud to a single human being, including you until three weeks ago.

You have been confessing the part that was already forgiven and hiding the part that needed company. That is not a moral failure. It is a misdirection, and it is extremely common, and it is why a hundred honest confessions can change nothing while remaining completely sincere.

Hear this: what you actually need is not more mercy, because you already have all of it, and there is no more to obtain. What you need is a person, and God is the one who said so first. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it something you can act on this week rather than something you observe about yourself.

And the practical half, plainly, because a message without it has failed you: real help exists and none of it is small faith. A counselor who works with this specifically, and who will ask you about the loneliness rather than the count. A doctor if the low afterward is heavy or the nights have gone. And one person, chosen by you, told in daylight, and I would say to you specifically: choose the person for company and not for absolution. You have plenty of absolution. You have no company.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a better confession and it is not a hundred and first.

You are not being asked to say the forty second version again. It was heard the first time and it has been settled since, and repeating it has become the way you avoid saying the other thing.

The subject changes. The address changes. What has to be said out loud is not what you did, it is that you are alone, and that sentence has never been spoken to a face in four years.

Freedom is already yours tonight, and it always was. It is not a prize for a confession finally done properly and it is not withheld pending a better one, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a kitchen at one in the morning.

And the loneliness has no right to keep being treated as a private weakness. It is not a character flaw and it is not the wages of a decade, because God Himself looked at it before anything had gone wrong and said it is not good. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.

So the next thing is not the forty seconds. It is a phone put face down in another room, one true sentence said out loud, and one person asked to lunch this week for no reason at all.

And hear this plainly too, because shame is heavier than anybody admits and it does not always stay where it starts. If the low afterward has got dark, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, that is not something to carry alone in a quiet house. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now, and none of them will be shocked by anything you say.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you stand, hands empty. The right to speak them is not earned by a hundred confessions and it is not withheld until one lands properly: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands empty, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.

  1. Forty second version I have said a hundred times, you are honest and you are finished being where I live. Scripture settled that account the first time it was brought, and God has not once asked me to bring it again.
  2. Aloneness I have never said out loud to a single face in four years, be named now, in the name of Jesus. You are not my punishment and you are not the residue of a decade, and my hands are empty and the phone is in another room, because God looked at you before anything was wrong and said, not that.
  3. God, You are in this kitchen at one in the morning and You said it first and You said it about a man who had done nothing wrong. Your word says it is not good for a man to be alone, so I am not what I did in the dark, I am clean now, and I am asking somebody to lunch this week for no reason at all.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
