Yvette can tell you which floorboard, which door, and which of the three bathrooms.
The upstairs one at the back. Not the family one and not the one downstairs by the coats, because the downstairs one has people walking past it constantly and the family one has a lock that has been broken since 2019 and everybody knows it.
The one at the back. And the tap goes on first, before anything, and it runs the whole time, because water is a sound that explains itself.
She is thirty-four. She has three children and a husband who works nights twice a week and a mother who lives eleven minutes away and comes over on Sundays and lets herself in.
And her own house has slowly filled up with information she has to keep in her head.
She knows which stairs are loud. She knows that her eldest, who is twelve, has started staying up and that the light under his door means the upstairs is not safe. She knows that the third bathroom takes eleven minutes before anybody wonders where she has gone, and fourteen before somebody calls up. She knows that her mother notices things and that Sundays are not available.
None of that was ever decided. It accumulated, the way a shed fills up.
And what got her this week, and it was such a small thing, was that her middle child could not find her and stood at the bottom of the stairs and shouted, and the child did not shout her name. The child shouted, are you in the back one?
Because a seven year old has worked out where her mother goes.
They do not know what I am doing. They know exactly where I am.
And here is where I stop talking about Yvette, because your house has a room like that too, and you have a whole system of quiet in it, and somebody small has started to know the shape of your absences even if they never learn the reason.
Let me say the first thing carefully and without any disgust in it at all, because disgust is fuel and it never once helped anybody: what is being described here is not a filthy woman. It is a person who has been solving a private problem privately for years, and the solving has spread into the rooms of a home.

A face that is not ashamed
Let me put the strongest thing down first, because you have not looked anybody in the face properly in a long time and that is the actual wound.
You are not required to walk around your own house with your face arranged. There is a promise about faces, and it is very short, and it does not include being found out: And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
They looked to Him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.Psalm 34:5
Watch the order in that verse, because it is the opposite of the order you have been living in.
You have assumed the sequence runs: stop, then be clean, then be able to look at people. The verse runs: look to Him, and the lightening happens, and the face follows. The looking is first, and it is not aimed at your family and it is not aimed at a mirror. It is aimed at God, and it is available at this moment, with the tap still running. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the room you are actually in.
So the unashamed face is not something you earn on the far side of a clean month, and Scripture is where I stand that rather than my own comfort, and God's Spirit is not standing on the landing outside the back bathroom waiting for you to come out and explain.
What the hiding is doing to the house
Now let me say the hard part, and I am going to say it as a friend and not as an accusation.
The screen is not the thing changing your home. The map is. The knowledge of which stairs are loud, the eleven minutes, the light under a boy's door, the unavailability of Sundays. That map has taken up residence in your mind and it runs constantly, and it costs you something in every room you walk through.
And the children are not learning what you are doing. They are learning that their mother is sometimes unreachable and that there is a place she goes, and children do not leave a gap like that empty. They fill it, usually with something about themselves.
That is not said to crush you. It is said because it is the actual reason to move, and it is a better reason than shame ever was.
So hear this: you are already clean, and the cleanness did not arrive on the strength of a good week, and there is no version of you God has been shown and walked away from. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it a thing you can walk down your own stairs in rather than a thing you agree with.
And the practical half, plainly, because a message without it has failed you: real help exists and none of it is small faith. A counselor who works with this specifically. A doctor if the low afterward is heavy or the nights have gone. One person, chosen by you, told in daylight, and it does not have to be your husband today. Nobody has the right to make that the price of your freedom. It may be right, with wisdom, in time. It is not a toll at a gate.
Here is the turn, and it is not a confession to a household and it is not a promise about tonight.
You are not being asked to be caught. What is being offered is the sequence in that verse, and it starts with a direction of the eyes and not with an exposure: look to Him, be lightened, and let the face follow.
And the map comes down not because somebody discovered it, but because a woman looked at God with the tap still running and stopped being someone with a secret in her own house.
Freedom is already yours this minute. It is not a prize for a clean month and it is not issued after a confession, because Christ paid for it in full and God does not take back what His Son paid for. That is what the written word says over you, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing it into a house with three bathrooms and a broken lock.
And the map has no right to keep running in your mind. It is not caution and it is not protecting your children, because what it actually hands them is a mother who is sometimes unreachable and a gap they will fill with something about themselves. Right now, as you read this, you are not reaching for something new. You are agreeing out loud with something finished.
So the next thing is not an announcement at dinner. It is the tap turned off, a phone put face down in another room, one true sentence said out loud, and one person told in daylight this week.
And hear this plainly too, because shame is heavier than anybody admits and it does not always stay where it starts. If the low afterward has got dark, or the thought has turned toward not being here at all, that is not something to carry alone in a quiet house. Get help now and tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Wherever you are there is a local line and there are people awake right now, and none of them will be shocked by anything you say.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with the door open and your hands empty. The right to speak them is not earned by a clean month and it is not lost in a back bathroom: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and exercised in His Name. Speak them, keep your hands empty, and leave whatever follows with Him, because the outcome is His.
- Map of loud stairs and eleven minutes and unavailable Sundays, you are coming down and you were never protecting anybody. Scripture says they looked to Him and were lightened, and the looking comes first and the face follows after.
- Shame that has turned the ordinary rooms of my house into places I go, get out now, in the name of Jesus. You have taught a seven year old where her mother goes without ever telling her why, and my hands are empty and the tap is off.
- God, You are in this house right now and You are not waiting on the landing for an explanation. Your word says their faces were not ashamed, so I am not what I did in the dark, I am clean now, and I am going downstairs with my face as it is.
