There is a rectangle of light in a dark house, and everything else in the building is asleep.
You could stand in the hallway and see it under the door. It moves a little. It goes brighter and then dimmer, and there is no sound at all, because the sound is off and has been off for a long time, and that has become part of it, the silence, the carefulness of it, the way a person can lie completely still and be doing something.
Two in the morning. The boiler ticking as it cools. Somebody breathing in a room down the hall.
And in the dark, one face lit from below.
He is not enjoying it. That is what nobody ever says out loud about this, and it is the thing that makes the next morning so heavy. If it were enjoyment he could at least understand himself. It is more like being at the end of a long corridor he only noticed he had walked down once he got to the end of it, and by then the door was already open and his thumb had already done the thing.
Then it stops. And the light goes off. And the room is completely dark, and he lies there on his back in it.
The next bit is the bit this whole page exists for.
Because what happens next is not the phone. What happens next is a sentence, and it arrives every single time, in his own voice, in the dark, unopposed: God has gone quiet on you now.
Not shouted. It never shouts. Just stated, the way you would state the time.
And in the morning he gets up and makes breakfast for people he loves and says nothing at all, and he prays with his mouth and not with his chest, and the silence he hears back is not God's silence. It is the sound of a man who has already decided, at two in the morning, that he was out of reach, and who has therefore stopped listening for an answer.
Now that is you in the dark house, and I think you knew from the first line. Not the phone. The sentence afterwards.

What the dark actually is
I want to tell you what is not happening here, and I want you to believe it, because you have probably braced for it.
Nothing on this page is going to describe anything. Nothing is going to use disgust as a lever. If you have ever read something on this subject that seemed designed to make you feel sick enough to stop, you already know how that ends: it works for four days and then it becomes the fuel. Shame is the engine of this thing. Putting more shame in the tank has never once slowed it down.
Nothing here is going to require you to tell anyone as the price of being free. Not a spouse, not a leader, not anybody. Telling a safe person can be a good and freeing thing, and plenty of people find it is, and it is still not what makes you clean, and I am not going to hold your freedom hostage to a conversation you have not had.
And nothing here stands against getting real help. If there is someone qualified sitting with you in this, keep going. This is not an alternative to that and it never was.
What I want to do is take one sentence off you. The two in the morning one.
Here is the Word on the dark, and I want you to hear where God is standing in it.
Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.Psalm 139:12
Now, that verse gets used as a searchlight. It gets read as: He sees you, so be careful. That is not what it is, and it is not what it is doing in that psalm.
Read on two lines and you get the reason it is there: for you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother's womb. This is the psalm of a man overwhelmed that he is known all the way through and has not been dropped. The darkness line is not a warning. It is a comfort. There is no room in your house dark enough to be outside of God, and He does not mean that as a threat.
Which means the sentence you heard at two in the morning was wrong on its own terms.
God did not leave the room when the light went off. He was not waiting in the hall for you to finish so He could be disappointed at you properly. He was in the room. He is not squeamish, He was not surprised, and He did not go anywhere, and He has never once in your life needed you to be clean before He would stay.
That is not softness about the thing. It is where the freedom actually comes from. A person who believes they are alone with it cannot be helped by anyone, including God, because they have already ruled the help out. A person who knows the room was never empty has somewhere to turn at two in the morning, and turning is the whole of it.
And if any of this has ever gone as far as thinking the people who love you would be better off without you here, tell someone today. In the United States, call or text 988, any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line or emergency number, and one person who knows your name. That is not a detour from freedom. It is part of it.
So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about tonight and it is not a demand about tomorrow.
You are clean this morning, and the cleanness did not arrive on the strength of a good run. Scripture says the darkness is not dark to Him and the night shines as the day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a room you can be seen in rather than a room you were caught in.
You are not being asked to guarantee anything. If it has been three years or if it was last night, this is the same page and it says the same thing to you, and nothing in it is conditional on this being the time it finally holds. Relapse is not a verdict. It has never been a verdict.
The turn is that you take back the sentence. The one that has been read out over you at two in the morning by your own voice, unopposed, for however long this has been going on.
You are not out of reach. You never were, not for one night of it, and Christ did not deal with what He dealt with in order to keep you at arm's length afterwards. You are free. Not free as a target. Free as a fact about who owns you, spoken over a man or a woman standing in a kitchen with a phone in another room.
Declare this over yourself
You are not conjuring anything. You speak from where you already are: in Christ, and that standing is yours, given to you, not restored each morning by how last night went. And you speak it under His will and not your own, however He answers, and you can leave the outcome with Him. And it is the Holy Spirit who makes that land in you rather than merely read well.
- Shame, you are not the one who names me and you do not get this morning. God says the darkness is not dark to Him, and the room I was most alone in turns out to be a room He was already sitting in.
- Dark, you are not my address and you never held the deeds. In the name of Jesus I am free, and I am clean now, because what Christ washed does not wait on my opinion of myself to be washed.
- Lord, You knit me together in secret and You are not disgusted by me in secret. Your word says my frame was not hidden from You, so my body is not the evidence against me, and I am Yours this morning exactly as much as on my best day.
